Why Dig?

This is Reid. He has a rare congenial brain disorder. If you dig a little deeper, however, you will uncover that there is much, much more to him. He is more than this medical mumbo jumbo that truly takes away from his enlightening, inspiring character. He is incredible. He is kind, empathetic, caring, a little stubborn, and a total trivia and movie guru. He is my little brother.

My little brother Reid has been my biggest influencer and inspiration in my life.  He is the reason I became a marketing major. From him, I have learned that there are so many things in life that are different than they seem, opaque from the surface, yet once you take the time to dig deeper you can uncover something truly incredible. I feel that marketing does somewhat of the same thing; as a marketer you try to bring everything to the surface, all the appealing and amazing attributes right there for everyone to see. Elements that would normally be kept hidden, a marketer discovers, uncovers, and shows the world.

Reid has had the strongest influence on my career objectives. From the moment him and I first watched Toy Story together back when I was 13 years old, I knew I wanted to be involved with the entertainment industry in any way possible. While other kids his age base their lives around friends and sports, my younger brother stays inside, plays with a string, and knows everything imaginable about movies. Without social or athletic skills, Reid relies on movies to get him through his everyday life. His peers often judge him as he acts differently than those around him, but once you dig beyond his outer shell, thanks to movies, he has an interesting and fascinating world. As I watched his reaction to Toy Story, I realized how much happiness a simple funny line could bring him.  That night, I made it my goal to help others like Reid, whose idea of a great day is watching movie after movie with a big bowl of popcorn.

Living with Reid has taught me compassion and acceptance. He has opened my eyes to the diversity of our world allowing me to appreciate the challenges others face. Reid is able to find his solitude through movies and this is why I hope to someday be able to contribute to this industry that has brought my little brother so much happiness and hope.
